Canva Element Locked or Can’t Edit? Fix Layers, Groups, and Objects That Will Not Move
You click an image in Canva, but it will not move. Or you try to edit text and a different object gets selected. The cause is often a lock, a group, or another layer sitting in front. The Layers panel can show the problem in seconds.
1. Check whether the element is locked
Select the object. If Canva shows a lock state, unlock it before you try to drag, resize, or edit it. Locking is useful for a background or logo because it stops accidental moves, but it can be confusing later.
If several items are locked as part of a group, you may need to select the group first.
2. Use Layers when the wrong object keeps getting selected
Open Position → Layers. This gives you a list of the objects on the page. Select the item from the list instead of clicking through a crowded design.
Layers also show what sits in front. If a large shape covers another item, move it backward or bring the target item forward.
3. Check groups before you ungroup everything
Groups make repeated cards, icons, and text blocks easier to move. Canva lets you edit many items inside a group without breaking the group. Try selecting the group and then the inner item first.
Ungroup only when you need separate control. If you ungroup a complex layout too early, it becomes easier to move pieces by mistake.
4. Use alignment tools instead of manual nudging
Once the element is editable, use Canva’s alignment and position controls to place it cleanly. Manual dragging can create tiny gaps that are hard to see.

5. Quick fix list for a stuck element
- Check the lock icon.
- Open Layers.
- Check whether the item is grouped.
- Bring the item forward if it is covered.
- Try the desktop editor if mobile selection is difficult.
- Reload if the editor is not responding.
